A. Beginnings 1975 - 1978

The group MuD/Design musical, renamed Sonde in 1978, came to be as a result of its members’ participation in the Musical Design Workshop given by Mario Bertoncini at the McGill University Faculty of Music. These pieces, recorded in Toronto, represent Sonde’s music as heard in its earliest public concerts. Other versions exist on Sonde en concert (ORAL CD 21, 2006 and LP Music Gallery Editions, MGE 14, 1978).

A1 - Sahabi II, 20/01/1978, 10:28.  Andrew Culver, Charles de Mestral, Pierre Dostie. Improvisation on two sahabis by two players recorded at the German Club on Jarvis Street, Toronto. Electronic filtering by a third player using equipment designed by Keith Daniel.  Amplification through contact and magnetic guitar microphones. Echo effect produced by a Revox tape recorder. The sahabis consist of metal frames holding approximately fifty steel strings of various lengths and thicknesses (0.03 to 0.15 cm).
